The future of investment: Human Capital.

September 30th, 2011

Signal were pleased to attend the second in a series of events run by Human Potential Accounting (HPA) on the subject of Human Capital Management (HCM) and it’s place in the financial reporting of UK business.

The event was held in the Dorchester Library of the Royal College of Physicians in London and was attended by a wide variety of interested people from many sectors:

  • Finance
  • HR
  • Journalism
  • Education
  • Banking
  • Professional Bodies
  • Think tanks
  • Corporate Governance firms

One area that was sadly not represented was Government, but more on that later.

Danger: Men (and women) at work.

September 23rd, 2011

Sadly there has been little in the news over the past week or so to really make me want to write a blog relevant to our core themes. With so much focus on the global economic crisis, depression, recession and slump, I am prompted to write about something that made me laugh.

Male employees would prefer ‘just male’ colleagues, citing ‘bitchiness’ as a factor, according to Reabur. (Click Link).

I confess, I did have a chuckle at what seemed to me to be a rather simplistic portrayal of female dominated environments as “bitchy”,  that somehow all the blokes together was a much more satisfactory state of affairs. Or even better, being the lone female in with all the blokes was a fantastic romantic opportunity, or vice versa.

My year in HR, so far. XpertHR.

September 12th, 2011

Today we feature a short post written by our Director Jane Pound for XpertHR, on the subject of ‘My year in HR, so far.’

The post and the series on XpertHR can be viewed here (Link).

Jane’s post can also be viewed below.

Jane has worked with a number of different public sector HR departments over the last year, and is therefore well placed to provide an overview of the impact that austerity measures are having on public sector HR departments.

An unspoken & inconvenient truth.

I read with some interest today the news article on the suggestion that Police Officers should wear their uniform on the commute to work (Link).

There are sound arguments on both sides. It will increase Police visibility and, as the Police Federation point out, will undoubtedly put Police at increased risk.

It wasn’t this part of the story that caught my eye though. It was the underlying theme about uniformed officers doing work that civilian staff could perform.
