Is engagement a cliché?

August 11th, 2011

Is engagement a cliché?  To be honest I’ve been struggling with something to say about it… well in business we want an engaged workforce. It’s a good thing and HR Department work hard to achieve it. Right? Let’s qualify that a little further by saying we want engagement and alignment with our business objectives. It’s no good having people who are highly engaged with your vision and mission, but not actually delivering anything of worth to the business.

That was it. A short blog by most people’s standards.

The news has been dominated by riots this week in London, Birmingham and Manchester. Aside from the shock and anger at the lawlessness, the prevailing question has been “why?” what makes a group of people want to behave in this way? There have been many commentators on this matter, one in particular caught my eye in a BBC article, “Prof John Pitts, a criminologist who advises several London local authorities on young people and gangs, says looting makes “powerless people suddenly feel powerful” and that is “very intoxicating”.
